Duke of Edinburgh Award
2014 – 2015 Bronze Award Winners
Throughout the course, the young candidates have been a pleasure to work with. They have followed all guidance and advice at all stages of the process and shown great levels of maturity and independence in the three sections.
During both the practise and assessed expeditions, all of the young candidates showed an exceptional level of team work.
Groups supported each other when completing all aspects of camp craft, including pitching tents, cooking meals, cleaning and packing their kit for the next day of walking.
When reading through the feedback from the assessors comments, it became very clear that these young people have applied themselves 100% to this process and our incredibly deserving of this prestigious award.
Congratulations to you all!
We wish you luck in pursuing your silver award in the future.
Miss McGarry, Mr Locke and Mr Marsden
How the pupils viewed the award
In order to achieve our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, we had to successfully complete 4 sections, physical, volunteering, skill and expedition.
Each section offered a different opportunity for us to better ourselves and learn more about our own strengths, weaknesses and personal attributes.
The expedition element of the course was tough! We had many weeks of training after school, learning about camp craft, navigation, first aid and many other skills, in order to prepare us for our outdoor expedition.
Our training walk at Guys Farm was really successful and we were all really pleased to be able to put our new knowledge into practice. Everyone worked well as a team and prepared group meals using the stoves we’d carried round all day. We were all glad of the rest on the Saturday evening, but were up bright and early on Sunday to put down our tents, pack up our kit and head out for Day 2 of walking and navigation!
For our final practical expedition we went to see Malham Cove. The weather was cold, wet and windy but we worked well in our teams and survived the challenging conditions. The poor weather combined with a burnt egg, a melted spork and a lost camera weren’t enough to dampen our spirits and we continued through to Sunday to successfully complete our second assessed navigation.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in making our DofE experience successful; our parents, all our assessors, the fantastic staff at Yamba and our course leaders, Mr Locke, Mr Marsden and Miss McGarry—We know we could not have done it without your help, guidance and support. Thank you.
